Tired of their status as Mexican citizens, the American colonists revolted in the fall of 1835, and gained control of Texas in a surprisingly short period of time. Expecting they had months to organize an army, the rebels were stunned when Santa Anna appeared with the Mexican army in front of the Alamo in late February 1836. Following the execution of the garrisons of the Alamo and Goliad, the revolution faced defeat until Sam Houston won a surprise victory at San Jacinto.

The Texan Revolution Part 1
Wednesday Jul 01, 2020
Wednesday Jul 01, 2020
Hoping to build a buffer between the Comanche and the settled areas of Mexico, the Mexican government allowed Americans to emigrate to remote and empty Texas. The native population was soon outnumbered by the immigrants, many of whom were from the southern states, so they wanted to continue their practice of slavery even though it was illegal in Mexico. Rapid immigration and the colonists’ growing dissatisfaction with their status as Mexican citizens meant that conflict was inevitable.

The Public Enemies Era (1933-1935)
Wednesday Jun 24, 2020

During the early 1930s, outlaws rampaged across much of America, seemingly robbing banks and kidnapping at will. Some of the more famous of these outlaws were Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde, Machine Gun Kelly and Alvin Karpis and the Barkers, but John Dillinger was undoubtedly the star. A wave of celebrity kidnappings and the murder of four law enforcement officers in Kansas City in June 1933 during a botched attempt to rescue a veteran bank robber made it clear that a national police force was required. Local police were forbidden to cross state lines, so the Bureau of Investigation (later called the FBI), part of the Department of Justice, was an obvious candidate for this national police force. However, it had to pass through a steep learning curve since it was under-funded and its agents were not originally allowed to carry guns. A year later, almost none of the Public Enemies were alive and the FBI had become a national institution.

The French Intervention in Mexico (1861-1867)
Thursday Jun 11, 2020
Thursday Jun 11, 2020
When Mexican President Benito Juarez refused to honor the foreign debts accumulated by his predecessor. Emperor Napoleon III of France used this refusal as an excuse to invade Mexico in 1862 and install Archduke Maximilian, younger brother of the Habsburg Emperor of Austria, as Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico in 1864. Napoleon hoped to exploit Mexico’s rich mineral resources and counterbalance the American republic with a Catholic Mexican monarchy. Maximilian proved to be more fixated on court etiquette than ruling the country, so when American pressure forced Napoleon to recall his army, forces loyal to Juarez restored the Mexican Republic in 1867.
